Who we are

MOT Wise is run by MOTWISE LTD, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17236380). Registered office: 66 Paul Street, London, EC2A 4NA. Email: hello@motwise.co.uk.

What MOT Wise is

A free website that turns a vehicle's public MOT and DVLA records into a plain-English report, with a risk rating and cost ranges. It's general information to help you decide what to check. It isn't an inspection of the vehicle, a valuation, or advice about what to do with it.

What we can and can't promise

  • Reports are made by fixed rules, with a small adjustment from a statistical model, from government records. Those records can contain mistakes, such as a mileage typed in wrongly at a test. We don't see or check the vehicle itself.
  • Risk ratings and costs are estimates, shown as ranges. What happens to a particular vehicle can be different.
  • A report doesn't replace an independent mechanic's inspection of the vehicle or a check of its paperwork.

We take reasonable care to show the records as we receive them and to work out ratings as described on our “How MOT Wise works” page.

Our responsibility to you

If we don't use reasonable care and skill and you lose out as a result, we're responsible for loss that was a foreseeable result. Loss is foreseeable if it was obvious it would happen, or if we both knew it might happen. We're not responsible for:

  • loss caused by a mistake in a government record that we showed as we received it;
  • loss from a decision made without an independent inspection, where that inspection would have found the problem;
  • business losses, such as lost profit or a lost opportunity, if you use MOT Wise for a business.

Nothing in these terms limits our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit.

Using MOT Wise

Anyone can use MOT Wise to check vehicles, including dealers checking individual vehicles. Please don't copy our reports or statistics in bulk, query the site with automated tools, or try to get round our limits on searches. We may block access that does.

Data sources

Vehicle data comes from the DVSA MOT History API and the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service. Comparison figures come from DVSA's national MOT data for 2025.

If something is wrong

Tell us at hello@motwise.co.uk. We aim to reply within 3 working days. If the MOT record itself is wrong, only the test centre or DVSA can correct it: gov.uk/getting-an-mot/correcting-mot-certificate-mistakes. You can also complain to your local Trading Standards through Citizens Advice. More ways to reach us are on our contact page.

Cookies and privacy

Our use of cookies and similar storage is covered in the Cookie policy. How we handle data, your rights under UK GDPR, and how ratings are worked out are in the Privacy policy.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when we add features. The date at the top shows the latest version. The version in force when you use the site applies.

Law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring a claim in your local courts.
