Up to four cars, side by side

Compare cars before you decide

Each car's risk score and MOT history, how cars like it hold up, and what it costs to run and repair, in one view.

The same four things for each car

A plain summary first, then the same four things for every car, so they're easy to set side by side. Every figure is a range, not a single number, because a range is the honest answer.

  • From its MOT record

A risk score out of 100

How many warning signs each car's MOT history shows, with a small part from how similar cars do. Lower is better. The colours show what makes it up.

  • Test by test

    Every MOT, and the mileage

Which MOTs each car passed first time, what failed when it did, and the miles read at each test.

  • From thousands of cars

How it's likely to hold up

What usually starts to need work on cars of the same model and age, when, and how often they fail as they get older.

  • For your mileage

    The all-in cost

Fuel, road tax, servicing, wear and likely repairs over the years you choose, as a range.

What the result does and does not mean

This is built from DVSA MOT history and DVLA vehicle records, to help you decide. The risk score reads each car's own MOT record; how a car is likely to hold up starts from how cars of the same make, model and age usually do, adjusted for its own record and mileage. Running costs leave out insurance, which depends far more on the driver than the car, and loss of value, as on every MOT Wise page.

It doesn't include the asking price or resale value. It can't see a service history or how a car drives. Two cars that look level in the figures can be very different in person. Use the comparison to work out what to look at and what to ask, then check each car yourself.
